Celebrating our everyday Women!
On a corner street in central Pietermaritzburg in front of a furniture store, there are two women working intensely on braiding a young lady’s hair. Their workstation consists of a barstool for their patron and a comb. (That’s it!). This is a simple example that exudes the character and pure innovation that South African woman possess. It can be described as a monumental quality and yet under-appreciated.
In celebrating Women’s Month we sometimes become overly consumed with the achievements of top females that form part of the business world, the community, our corporate sphere, the media and well all areas that are exposed to us. In the process, we sometimes forget to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and strength that emits from the everyday women. These women are bus drivers, Spaza shop owners, domestic executives (that many a time serve as nannies too), are mothers that run the home from ceiling to floor, are tailors and dressmakers, are police officers and teachers, caregivers at children’s homes and at retirement homes, the list is endless. Every day we meet or cross paths with a woman that holds a history, maybe she is going through an abusive relationship or a divorce, maybe she is paying her way through university by waitressing or maybe she is trying to support her family. Regardless of where she comes from or what she stands for she is fighting her own personal battle. We commemorate Women’s Day, remembering a historical battle, a stand by powerful and courageous women that spoke up for their rights. Let’s stand up and appreciate those rights and moreover appreciate what we do have – – – a country filled with all types of women; Women that are taking a stand in their own unique way every day.
Oprah Winfrey said it best when she said: “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough”
